Get To Know Mexican Chocolate

Did you know that chocolate originated from Mexico? Chocolate is made from the cacao bean, known as “food of the gods” in Latin.

The cacao tree, where chocolate comes from, was first used among the Mayans. They created a potent drink made from the cacao bean that was used as a ritual beverage and shared during marriage ceremonies. This drink is very different from the sweet chocolates that people enjoy today, as it was strong and sour.

The Mayans were the first farmers and consumers of chocolate. The Aztecs inherited this affinity for chocolate. Cacao beans were used as a form of currency and used to cure colds and fevers during their time. Chocolate’s roots are in Mexico, though the Ivory Coast in West Africa remains the world’s biggest exporter of chocolate.

Today, chocolate is still used as a staple ingredient in many famous Mexican dishes. Mole poblano, one of Mexico’s most cherished dishes, is made a unique combination of Mexican chocolate, peanuts, and chile. Champurrado is a thick, warm chocolate drink. Traditional Mexican hot cocoa is flavored with cinnamon.
